Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq has formally tendered his resignation from the Policy and Resources Committee.

The politician sent a message to the Bailiff, dated 29 August, explaining that he had heard P&R would be looking to have him removed as a committee member this week.

Deputy Le Tocq wrote that he hoped tendering his resignation would mean that was “unnecessary”.

He was correct, with P&R very quickly asking to withdraw the motion to remove him.

The Bailiff has to accept a politician’s resignation but it is expected that will also happen, paving the way for the States to elect another deputy to the vacant seat on P&R when they meet on Wednesday.

Deputy Le Tocq’s resignation letter came one week after he was remanded in custody following the decision by Guernsey Police to charge him with numerous telecommunication and sexual offences.

He is next due before the Magistrate’s Court on 15 September, before his case is committed to the Royal Court in October.

Deputy Le Tocq had already been suspended from P&R meetings and committee work since his initial arrest on suspicion of telecommunications offences in July.

The committee issued a statement after the members learnt that Deputy Le Tocq had written to the Bailiff to tender his resignation from P&R.

It also confirmed that no decisions had been made at the time on who might replace Deputy Le Tocq on P&R.

“We have this afternoon received confirmation that Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq has tendered his resignation from the Policy & Resources Committee,” wrote P&R on Monday afternoon.

“Given this development, our Committee is content to lodge a motion to withdraw the policy letter we submitted last week, seeking the States’ agreement to terminate his period of office on the Committee.

“We will shortly discuss potential nominations for the vacant position on our Committee.”

The next States meeting begins on Wednesday morning.

One of the 35 available members of the States of Deliberation will be elected to P&R for the remainder of this term of office during that meeting.
