The announcement comes days after Guernsey Water revealed it is investigating how a CCTV video of two people having sex at the reservoir came to be circulated on social media.

Guernsey Water said: “A thorough internal investigation will identify any areas where Guernsey Water’s data protection policies and procedures need to be strengthened and where these need to be better communicated to staff.

The video of the two people on the reservoir dam was shared widely on social media last week and how it was leaked has been referred to the Police and the Data Protection Authority “as a potential breach of data protection regulations”. An internal investigation has also been launched.

The internal investigation will also consider a CCTV clip of a separate incident, where a contractor’s van collides with gates at the reservoir, which has also been shared on social media,” said Guernsey Water.

That recording had been shared with the contractor to assist with a health and safety review into the incident. It is not yet known how the footage was subsequently shared on social media.

The Managing Director of Guernsey Water said the States-owned utility has CCTV footage at various operational sites for “very valid and important reasons”.

As far as the footage is concerned, we take our responsibilities very seriously, hence the reason for launching our internal investigation.

We will continue to co-operate with the relevant authorities in their investigations and will instigate any recommendations from them in addition to any that come out of our own internal review.”
