The two-day course is suitable for staff from nursery schools, pre-schools, after school clubs, childminders and carers of children at home.
The paediatric first aid course meets the Ofsted Early Years and the UK Childcare Register requirements.
The training is designed to help childcare workers understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider and allow participants to be able to assess an emergency situation safely and provide first aid for an infant or child.
Participants of the course will learn how to deal with scenarios where a child or infant:
- is unresponsive
- is not breathing normally
- has an airway obstruction
- is experiencing the effects of extreme heat or cold
- has anaphylaxis
- has external bleeding
- has burns
- has head or back injuries
- has injuries to bones, joints and muscles.
It also covers chronic medical conditions and sudden illness, including:
- diabetic emergencies
- asthma attack
- allergic reaction
- meningitis
- febrile convulsions.
The course is being delivered by Heather Langlois, who worked as a Padeatirc Nurse Practioner in the United States. Mrs Langlois said: “This course is so important for anyone responsible for looking after children and babies. No-one wants to be in a situation where they are faced with a seriously ill or injured child, but this course is designed to not only teach practical life-saving skills, but it is designed to give people confidence to put their skills into action. The knowledge gained from this course could be the difference between a life saved and a life lost.”
