Guernsey residents in care homes, and members of Age Concern groups, will receive a special Liberation Day hamper as part of the island’s celebrations this year.
Each one will contain Guernsey Gâche, banana bread, orange drizzle cake, scones, Guernsey Dairy products, and replica ration cards.
The Guernsey Hamper Company designed the hampers, drawing inspiration from the Red Cross parcels delivered by the SS Vega in 1945.
The contents are intended to evoke memories of Liberation Day, when oranges and bananas—rare during the war—were distributed to children, some of whom were unfamiliar with the fruit.

Deliveries to care homes begin 8 May, with Age Concern group members receiving theirs during Liberation Day week.
Arrangements will also be made for people who live independently who’d like to receive a hamper too.
Deputy Sue Aldwell, a member of the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture, said it’s a wonderful scheme.
“The Liberation Day hampers provide such joy to residents of Guernsey’s residential homes and Age Concern groups, and we are so looking forward to creating them once again this year.
“The hampers allow us to ensure that all generations are able to participate in the Bailiwick celebrations and we know they provide the residents with a chance to reminisce and commemorate.”

The hampers are sponsored by global insurance broker Howden.
“Having lived in Guernsey, I understand just how important Liberation Day is, especially for this historic 80th anniversary,” said Sophie Jones, Client Director at Howden.
“Guernsey holds a special place in my heart, and I’m delighted that Howden can contribute to celebrating this milestone. Through our partnership with SPF, we are deeply committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work.”
Mortgage and insurance specialist SPF is a part of Howden and Managing Director Pierre Blampied is also pleased to be involved with the sponsorship deal for this year’s donated hampers.
“Being part of the 80th anniversary celebrations is incredibly important to us. Liberation Day is a day of profound reflection – a time to commemorate and honour the generation whose lives were shaped by the war and its aftermath. Howden shares our commitment to supporting the community, and we are proud to play a role in this meaningful initiative.”
