An innovative acoustic pod is creating an inclusive space to support learning for deaf and hard of hearing children.
Little Buttons Preschool worked with the States Early Years Team to introduce the new facility for children with hearing loss.
The pod is a sensory area for quiet and focused play which eliminates auditory and visual overstimulation.
Funded by the Guernsey Deaf Children’s Society, it was made to support one-to-one time separate from other busier environments, allowing a cozy but ergonomic space with enough room for adults to stand in.
While it’s currently at Little Buttons, it has been given to the States Early Years Team, as its flexibility allows it to be moved around the island and taken where needed.

“A quiet space like this allows [deaf and hard of hearing] children to confidently access language, play and learning,” said Emma Fraser, Head of Sensory Support Services.
“It’s a fantastic example of how small environmental changes can make a big difference to inclusion.”
Leonie Burrows from the Guernsey Deaf Children’s Society, agreed.
“The charity fully understands the importance of young children being able to access language in a quieter environment, we were delighted to be able to fund the acoustic pod to be used at Little Buttons Preschool.”
So far the pod has been a success helping the children “feel more confident and engaged”, as well as creating an inclusive environment, said Heidi de Mouilpied, Manager at Little Buttons Preschool.
