A new app has been created to help Guernsey fight back against weeds.

Lars Janssen has launched his Weed Watch app as a community lead initiative to reduce the high quantity of overgrown weeds, following the ban on glyphosate.

The toxic herbicide was banned by the States in 2023 in a bid to preserve Guernsey’s environment, specifically our raw water supplies and biodiversity.

The topic has recently made headlines with some people calling for States Works to use it again to get on top of the number of weeds growing across the island.

Mr Janssen said his app comes with a message that the glyphosate ban doesn’t mean needy weeds can takeover.

The app developer said: “Many people remain concerned about (glyphosate’s) potential health and environmental impacts, which were among the reasons for its ban in the first place.

“Whatever your view on the subject, one thing is clear: waiting indefinitely for the solution will not improve the current situation.”

Using his app, users can report and rate the severity of weed patches across the island.

You can list them as resolved by someone else or by taking action yourself.

Ultimately, the Weed Watch app’s function is to help the public understand the importance of weed monitoring and to encourage the States to consider longer-term defences.
