‘The Guernsey Deportees’, tells the story of Guernseywoman, Jill Chubb, who alongside her grandson, Oliver Guilou, has now been nominated for a national award.
The podcast is being recognised alongside productions from major studios at the British Podcast Awards, (BPAs), with winners being announced at a ceremony in London this October.
The six-part audio series became available to stream for free on multiple platforms earlier this year, (Wednesday, 23 April 2025), and sheds a personal light on the deportation of Channel Islanders to internment camps in Germany, from the perspective of Ms Chubb.
It’s been nominated in the ‘History’ category at the BPAs, considered by many to be one of the highest honours in national podcasting.
Jill was just three years old when she, alongside her family, was forced to leave Guernsey, and sent to St.Malo, transported to Dorsten, before arriving at Biberach.

Ollie says that being able to tell his Grandmother’s story to a national audience is an honour: “These are the biggest podcast awards in the UK – and we’re overwhelmed to have been selected as finalists.
Mr Guillou continued: “The fact that my Grandma’s story has touched the hearts of so many, and now been recognised as one of the best new entries in British podcasting is unreal. It’s such an honour to put her story – and Guernsey’s history – on the map.”
Whilst Jill Chubb said: “It’s an amazing achievement. The podcast is an incredible reflection of my story, and of the other deportees.
She continued: “It catches the emotions of everybody and it’s an honour to be shortlisted. I’m so, so delighted that we told it in this way. I can’t thank Ollie And Philly enough.”
