Art for Guernsey has donated more than £2,500 to the newly established Royal Golden Guernsey Goat Foundation.

The funds came from the sale of artworks featured in a goat-themed exhibition held at the Mansell Street gallery in May.

Art for Guernsey Chairman David Ummels said: “Art for Guernsey, as a charity, is on a mission to apply art for the greater good. When His Excellency made a call to care for the Royal Golden Guernsey Goat, we felt that organising an exhibition made sense.

“More awareness and more funding were required. That resulted in a collaboration with the farming community and an exhibition featuring professional artists alongside an open call, inviting more than 50 local artists to take part.

“The result was an incredible feel-good community exhibition connected to a live conservation cause, with a view to raising awareness locally while advocating for the breed internationally.”

The Royal Golden Guernsey Goat Foundation has been established as part of efforts to protect and promote the breed on its native island.

The donation will help offset the costs of the ten goats imported in September to introduce new bloodlines to the local goat population.

His Excellency, the Lieutenant-Governor, said: “Art for Guernsey’s goat exhibition brought out the best in the island’s artistic talent, engaged local schoolchildren and has directly benefited this special breed. It shows great initiative and the power of art for a good cause. I am grateful to David and his team for their initiative and support.”
