Guernsey’s Old Quarter will undergo a major transformation this summer, with the island’s second Street Art Festival looking to build on last year’s efforts. 

Twelve months ago Art For Guernsey put street art centre stage with its ‘Diversion’ exhibition.

Now, its latest show – ‘Immersion’ – is intended to showcase street art at its best and most transformative – in keeping with the charity’s goals of applying art with purpose.

David Ummels, Chairman and Founder of Art for Guernsey, said he hoped to build on the “resounding success” of last year’s exhibition. 

Curated by renowned artist Daniel Hosego, ‘Immersion’ focuses on the island’s connection to the sea, with the Mill Street canvas transforming throughout the month to fit the theme in a way that will “animate the Old Quarter and bring art into everyday life”.

A mixture of local and visiting artists are set to take to the street with spray cans and brushes, as familiar faces are set to transform the Old Quarter. 

Express has previously explored street art and its uses, through the lens of those plying their trade locally and internationally.

Those visiting the street next week will see a variety of artists working, including Teddy Baden, Léo Dieleman, Luke Gallie, Joe Gaudion, Tim Gaudion, Daniel Hosego, Charlie McFarley, Nic Roussel and Luke Webb.

Meanwhile, inside the Mansell Street Gallery visitors will find a curated showcase of artworks by a host of artists with their works “rooted in street culture”. 

They include 616, Teddy Baden, Will Barras, Patrick Bremer, Léo Dieleman, Matt Dosa, Glen Fox, Joe Gaudion, Tim Gaudion, Chin Keeler, Licea, Charlie McFarley, Finn Stone, Woodie and Xenz.

The show returns a year after a summer of street art injected colour and life onto unloved properties.

Mr Ummels said: “Following the resounding success of last year, and considering the huge impact that ‘Diversion’ had in terms of visually rejuvenating the Old Quarter, inspiring our community and entertaining the island’s visitors, we felt inspired to turn this initiative into a perennial festival.

“Expect the Guernsey Street Art Festival to go from strength to strength over the years, for everyone’s enjoyment!”

A private view of the exhibition is scheduled for Wednesday 24 June, before opening to the public the next day.
