Although initial reports indicated one of the vehicles was on fire, Guernsey Police now believe the perceived smoke could have been residue let off when the airbags inflated.

Guernsey Water was also called to the scene to check whether leaking oil was making its way into the island’s wastewater system, while States Works took sand bags to start the cleanup.

Traffic wardens were called in to help direct cars around the busy junction.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Guernsey Police on 725111.
