Guernsey Energy has unveiled what it is calling a “pioneering” renewable fuel solution for the island – and it’s selected three organisations to receive the alternative gas on a trial period.
Bean 14, Les Bourgs Hospice, and the 8th Guernsey Sea Scouts will be supplied with ‘BioLPG gas’, that Guernsey Energy says is a “renewable alternative to conventional propane gas” to kickstart their green energy journey.
From a practical standpoint, participating businesses will use BioLPG in the same way they currently use traditional liquid petroleum gas (LPG) for heating, cooking, hot water, and other day-to-day needs.
And Guernsey Energy says the “transition to BioLPG will happen without the need for any modifications to their existing infrastructure or appliances”.

Darryl Goddard, Managing Director of Guernsey Energy and Island Energy, said: “This renewable gas makes it so easy for people to choose a more sustainable energy option, without having to upgrade their businesses or homes. We’re looking forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on our environment.”
The trial aims to demonstrate the practicality, reliability, and environmental benefits of BioLPG in real-world applications.
Guernsey Energy will closely monitor customer feedback throughout the trial to help shape how this renewable fuel can be offered for wider adoption across the island.
Unlike traditional propane, BioLPG is an alternative gas produced from renewable feedstocks such as organic vegetable waste materials. BioLPG is chemically identical to conventional propane, which means it is fully compatible with existing house hold appliances meaning there is no need to install new equipment.
“We’re delighted to receive this new energy solution from Guernsey Energy,” said Rob Jones, CEO at Les Bourgs Hospice.
“Transitioning to cleaner gas supports our commitment to sustainability, and reflects Guernsey’s pledge to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.”
Guernsey Energy has described the option as an “affordable, convenient and non-intrusive ‘drop-in’ solution, that helps businesses decarbonise without the need for costly infrastructure upgrades or changes to existing appliances”.
