Running through to this time next week (7 June), there are hundreds of events taking place around the UK to say thank you, with some taking place on the island.

In Guernsey, the week has been celebrated annually for years now, with the Association of Guernsey Charities coordinating what goes on. They also use the week as a time to promote their website volunteer.gg, which is a platform for charities to advertise any volunteering positions they have.

Each year, the week has a theme. 2019’s is ‘time to celebrate’.

Charities themselves can get involved in five different ways. They are asked to say thanks to all of their volunteers and to recognise long service achievements. They also are urged to engage with the public to explain what they do and why, and in doing so, share their volunteer’s stories on social media. Finally, part of the celebrations are about looking to get more people involved, so posting new volunteer opportunities online is also suggested.

48% of locals recently surveyed by the AGC regularly volunteer their time for two or more local charities. To read more about this year’s volunteer week, go to volunteer.gg.
