The four vacant seats on Guernsey’s senior political committee will be filled today.

Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez was yesterday elected as the President of Policy and Resources – and she’ll be first to nominate her four preferred candidates for the other P&R roles during today’s States meeting which starts at 09:30.

Other deputies can be nominated by States members too.

It’s expected that a procedural motion will be put to the Bailiff asking if deputies can put questions to all of the candidates before votes are cast.

The P&R Committee has five members on it – like other principal committees of the States.

The P&R President – also known colloquially as the Chief Minister – is the senior member.

She will have a Vice President working beneath her.

There will also be a Treasury Lead, and an External Relations Lead.

The different roles has varied somewhat in the past – with Deputy John Gollop recently serving on P&R as a Bailiwick and Parish link-man as well as taking a lead on employment matters. Previously, former Deputy David Mahoney led on States property issues.

It’s thought that Deputy de Sausmarez may nominate either or both Deputy Mark Helyar or Jonathan Le Tocq for seats on P&R after she beat them in the secret ballot to be named P&R President yesterday.

Other tips for a top job are Deputy Gavin St Pier, Deputy Tina Bury, or Deputy Yvonne Burford.

The States reconvene at 09:30 with a view to nominations being made after a tribute speech to former Deputy Harold Allen who died recently.
