Heather Watson has been knocked out of the ladies’ singles competition at Wimbledon in the first round.
Currently ranked 143rd in the world, Watson faced Danish world number 22 and number 23 seed Clara Tauson on Tuesday afternoon.
Watson won the first set before losing the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Watson was only playing in the ladies’ singles tournament after receiving a Wimbledon wildcard, based on her past success in the competition as a British player.
She’s never got past the third round though – with arguably her best performance coming in 2015 when she came close to defeating Serena Williams in that round.
She’s previously won the mixed doubles though – alongside Henri Kontinen in 2016.
Paired with fellow British player Emily Appleton, Watson is competing in the women’s doubles this year.
They’ll face Russian pair Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider when the competition kicks off later in the tournament.
