A man who jumped bail after being found guilty of drug offences six years ago has been caught, brought back to Guernsey, and sent to prison.

Jamie Ferbrache was involved with a drug smuggling attempt at Guernsey Airport in 2019, involving baggage handlers.

Ferbrache denied attempting to import more than 9kgs of cannabis into Guernsey but was found guilty at trial in 2020.

While his co-accused were sentenced in January 2021, Ferbrache didn’t turn up to court and it was later found that he had absconded and was living in Yorkshire.

A joint operation between the Guernsey Border Agency and North Yorkshire Police led to his arrest earlier this year. He was brought back to Guernsey and sentenced by the island’s Royal Court yesterday.

Now 31, Ferbrache has been sentenced to a total of 7 years and 5 months imprisonment for the importation of cannabis, failure to provide access to his mobile phone, and for failing to surrender to custody after he absconded to the UK.

A spokesperson for Bailiwick Law Enforcement said: “Failing to surrender to custody is a serious offence impacting on the proper administration of justice.

“Bailiwick Law Enforcement officers will actively seek to pursue offenders who have absconded from this jurisdiction.

“Guernsey Border Agency would like to thank the North Yorkshire Police Officers involved in this case for their assistance in apprehending Ferbrache and his subsequent return to Guernsey. This collaborative working was essential to ensure that he was brought to justice.”
