Cameron Chalmers and Billy Le Poullain were both nominated by the public for their successes over the last year.

The pair will face a public vote which is open until the winner is announced during a gala event at Beau Sejour this evening.

Jersey Archer Lucy O’Sullivan and Jersey BMX Rider Alex Coleborn are both also nominated.

The event, sponsored by Betway, will also honour other sports men and women, teams and coaches, with awards for each as well as the Michael Lucas Sporting Hero Award.

Betway’s Anthony Werkman said: “It has once again been a fantastic year of sport for the islands, the nominations demonstrate the outstanding achievement by Channel Islands sports men and women throughout 2017. We are looking forward to an exciting evening of celebration and congratulate all those who have been shortlisted.”

The guest of honour for this year’s event is British Paralympian Richard Whitehead, who is a gold medalist as well as the world record holder for athletes with a double amputation in the marathon and half marathon events.

Mr Whitehead will take part in a question and answer session during the awards ceremony and is also due to take part in a PE session with pupils at Le Murier School earlier in the day.

Pupils at Le Murier have different abilities and the school’s website says: “we endeavour to provide a range of challenging opportunities, support and friendship, a safe and stimulating environment and an encouragement of lifelong learning”.
