The States might be gearing up for one of the most important decisions in decades, but before that there was some more run-of-the-mill business to get through.
Former Chief Minister Gavin St Pier is back on a States committee after being elected unopposed to Employment & Social Security (ESS).
Deputy St Pier fills the vacancy left by Deputy Garry Collins, who recently stepped down in the hopes of being on an – as yet to be approved – Appropriations Committee.
His appointment was confirmed during today’s States meeting, alongside the election of Deputy Marc Leadbeater to the Committee for Economic Development.
While Deputy Leadbeater faced a ballot against Deputy Simon Vermeulen, securing the seat by 26 votes to 11, Deputy St Pier was the only candidate to come forward for the ESS role.
The former Chief Minister returns to committee politics just months after he was removed from Policy and Resources, after he and his wife were arrested and released without charge on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Deputy Leadbeater’s election to ED follows the resignation of Deputy Haley Camp from the committee last month in protest at what she saw as an “authoritarian” leadership style.
Speaking before the vote, the Home Affairs President said he hoped his appointment would help strengthen links between the two committees, particularly as work continues on reviewing Guernsey’s population management system.
He also pointed to his background in construction as experience that could support the committee’s work on housing and development issues.
