Guernsey’s States Assembly is hoping to storm through its remaining business tonight, in a bid to avoid having to sit on Friday as Storm Austen batters the Bailiwick.
Express understands deputies are planning to sit late into Thursday evening to get through the agenda, rather than return to the Royal Court on Friday morning when the worst of the weather is expected.
The Assembly had originally scheduled a three-day sitting, running from Wednesday to Friday, but the incoming storm has put pressure on deputies to get their business wrapped up before the winds pick up.
Some business, including debate on the Police Complaints Commission’s annual report, has already been deferred to the next States meeting.
A red wind warning has been issued ahead of Storm Austen, with the strongest winds expected between 06:00 and 11:00 on Friday.
With the risk of falling trees and flying debris, the aim is to get the States’ business done before the storm blows in.
However, if deputies are unable to get through all their business today the Assembly could still sit tomorrow.
