On Tuesday a Russian warship fired warning shots at a British couple sailing in the English Channel, near the Isle of Wight.
The incident – which comes days after the Royal Marines boarded a Russian “shadow fleet” oil tanker – occurred less than 60 miles from Alderney.
So, with tensions rising between the UK and Russia, should sailors in the Bailiwick be worried?
Not according to the States, which said the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) – which is responsible for the Bailiwick’s defence – was treating it as an “isolated incident”.
James Way, Harbour Master & Register of British Ships, told Express the States was “working closely” with the UK’s Joint Maritime Security Centre (JMSC), which provides “maritime security threat awareness and cross government coordination”.
Mr Way said: “Mariners, including recreational sailors, should take note of any advice issued by the relevant maritime authorities with respect to maritime security and continue to comply with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS).”
