A small Pomeranian dog growls.

Two Guernsey posties get bitten by a dog every month, according to the island’s post service.

Now, Guernsey Post is re-launching its safety campaign to help reduce the number of dog bites – ‘Protect Our Posties. Protect Your Pets.’

The campaign, which will run on social media as well as though an island-wide leaflet campaign, will encourage people to take “simple actions” to reduce the issue.

Shelley Carberry, Health and Safety Manager, said: “We know how much people love their dogs – we do too.

“But even the most well-behaved pet can act unpredictably when someone approaches the door.”

Ms Carberry said securing dogs before answering the door helped “keep our posties safe while also protecting their pets from harm or distress”.

A spokesperson said: “No matter the size or temperament of the dog, even a single bite can have a serious impact.

“When a postie is bitten, they may require hospital treatment, which can include injections and antibiotics.”

Small changes in routine could help “prevent a painful incident”, ensuring post could be delivered safely.
