Guernsey Met recorded 29.7mm of rainfall at the island’s airport by 15:00 today.
That is likely to have made today the wettest day since August last year when the tail end of ex-hurricane ‘Ernesto’ brought heavy rainfall to our shores during the morning of Saturday 24.
On that occasion, rain started falling just before midnight on Friday 23 and was fairly steady until just after dawn when Guernsey experienced about “half an hour of violent
rain which yielded some 22.6mm in the hour between 0700 and 0800″, said Guernsey Met.
Widespread flooding was reported across the island then too, with further showers later in the morning.
Today’s rainfall was persistent until around 15:00 when a break in the downpours occurred.
Areas of localised flooding have been reported, with Guernsey Water warning that some of it may be sewage after the drainage system was overwhelmed.
More rain is forecast into this evening and overnight.
January has already been ‘wetter than the long term average’ with 140mm of rainfall so far.
2001 saw the ‘wettest January’ on record with 210.0mm of rainfall recorded.
1992 was the ‘driest January’ recorded with just 15.4mm of rainfall.
2025 has already seen around 50mm more rainfall than the long term average.
