The Rovers Football Club pitch quickly went from being a grassy field of dreams to a quagmire on Wednesday.

CCTV footage from the club house captured the transformation as Guernsey received 33.3mm of rainfall in one day.

The video shows how quickly the pitch went from playable to waterlogged.

At 10:30 it looks perfect for a muddy game with plenty of slide tackles, but by 15:00 it closer resembles the model yacht pond.

A spokesperson from the club said: “We would hope to have the pitches back in action for next weekend, subject of course to the weather!”.

The Guernsey Met office recorded what is likely to be the island’s wettest day since August last year on Wednesday.

The 33.3mm of rainfall caused several areas of localised flooding, with Guernsey Water warning some of the excess water may be sewage after the drainage system was overwhelmed.

The utility company had to coordinate the same amount of emergency collections in one hour that it would usually issue in a single day.

According to the Met Office, today’s weather is cloudy with occasional rain, clearing to sunny periods, although we have a 90% chance at rain of some point.

This weekend should see a smaller chance of rain, with patchy spots potentially on Sunday, potentially giving Rovers’ pitch a chance to drain.

The Gov.je website, which hosts MET data for Guernsey and Jersey, shows a chance of a break in the wet weather this weekend.
