The knitters supplying warm hats to newborn babies in Ukraine can rest assured that their crafts will reach the infants they’re intended to help.

The ‘Newborn Baby Hats Appeal’ has formed a new partnership with Ferryspeed and the Bournemouth based charity ‘Ukraine Relief’.

Having had to temporarily pause shipments while logistical problems were resolved, the campaign is now back on track with Ferryspeed agreeing to transport the knitwear from Guernsey to Ukraine Relief in Bournemouth. The hats will then be taken to Ukraine with other aid items.

“We are extremely grateful to Ferryspeed and Ukraine Relief for responding to our request and look forward to fruitful cooperation,” said Lilita Krūze, the Founder of the Newborn Baby Hats Appeal.

She confirmed the campaign’s green collection boxes have returned to both Waitrose stores in Guernsey and several parish churches including Castel, St Matthew’s, St Saviour’s, Torteval, and Vale.

“I personally am so very grateful to the entire Appeal’s Working Group for their time, hard work and excellent communication skills, which have made it possible to find new cooperation partners,” said Ms Krūze.

She asked if anyone wanting to knit a donation can make hats for newborns in Ukraine who will be facing extreme weather conditions, with air temperatures dropping as low as -30°c.

Other new, handmade items including knitted or crocheted blankets, cardigans and booties, mittens, and soft toys are also welcome.

Supporters are also encouraged to include a short, personal message of support for the new mothers and their babies to be sent alongside the winter essentials.

“I also thank our supporters for their patience and encouragement,” added Ms Krūze.

“Several of them have been with us for almost four years and were saddened when we had to suspend operations for an indefinite period. Less than three weeks have passed and we are back on track. Thank you for your trust!”
