Islanders travelling with the popular squishy dumpling toys are being advised to pack them in their hold luggage rather than take them through security.
The soft sensory toys, which are shaped like the Asian delicacy and contain liquid, are subject to the same security restrictions as other liquids carried through the airport.
Ports of Jersey warned that taking the toys through security in hand luggage could result in additional screening – or passengers having to give them up.
“We recommend packing squishies and similar sensory toys in your hold luggage before you travel,” a spokesperson said.
“These items can be subject to additional screening, which may impact queue times, and if they don’t meet current security requirements, they may need to be surrendered at the security search point.
“Packing them in your checked baggage will help keep everyone, including your squishie, moving smoothly through to departures.”
The warning comes amid a surge in popularity for the collectible toys, fuelled by TikTok videos showing influencers “unboxing” dumplings from basket-shaped containers in the hope of finding rare glitter versions.
Original Squish Dumplings made by RMS International have repeatedly sold out at The Entertainer in St Helier, with store manager Pawel Modzelewski previously saying: “They are really popular. Every time we get them they just fly off the shelves.”
However, the craze has also prompted safety concerns over imitation versions.
Jersey Trading Standards recently urged parents not to give children “squishy dumpling” toys or similar products that have a strong solvent or petrol-like smell, or which lack clear safety labelling.
The warning followed the recall of Squeezy Dumplings sold by Samsons Cash and Carry Ltd after tests found excessive levels of benzene in the toy’s outer layer, posing what regulators described as a “serious chemical risk”.
Trading Standards said no complaints had been received locally, but officers were “actively monitoring the situation” alongside UK authorities.
