Police said the collision took place around 01:00 near La Hougue Bie, with the driver later detained on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop and report what had happened.

No other cars were involved.

Police posted about the arrest on Facebook, with an accompanying photo showing significant damage to the black vehicle, which was covered in dirt and whose light appeared to have broken off in the impact.

The arrest is the latest in the Police’s ‘Operation Canvas’ crackdown on dangerous driving and unroadworthy vehicles.

The mission was launched after officers noticed an increase in the number of drivers taking advantage of quiet roads during the virus lockdown by driving dangerously and too fast.

Particularly in their sights are modified cars, as there have been reports of speeding motorists who have placed special “stealth film” over their number plates to make them unreadable for speed guns and cameras.

One individual was arrested earlier this month for speeding and failing to stop. Their car was impounded for illegal modifications.
