Every week, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here’s this week’s offering…

Night of the Living Riffs

Five local bands are all set to take over The Sundown tonight for an evening of “monstrous riffs”.

The Halloween-themed event will feature 88 Bunkface, The Tide, August Gone, Without Captain, and KÄSE.

Tables are being removed for the night to give the place a traditional ‘gig’ atmosphere and food will be suspended to allow for drinks services only.

Music starts at 18:00, with tickets are available online or on the door.

Shattering ideals of female respectability

A new “transdisciplinary” exhibition created by Women’s Research Wananga aims to place women’s experiences front and centre.

Founded by Māori and Jèrriaise artist Rychèl Thérin Scott, the art collective focuses on creating art centered on women’s lived experiences through transdisciplinary, intersectional, and transinclusive methods.

Its latest exhibition, called ‘CONSUMED’, features paintings, sculptural works, installation, textiles, performance, and written research created by Rychèl alongside other Jersey and international artists Emma D. McGuire, Dr Nina Rodin, Lindsay Rutter, and Dr Caitlin Shepherd.

The exhibition “explores errant bodies and minds that reject the tyranny of mandated happiness and consumerist conventions, that defiantly shatter accepted ideals of female respectability, mental and physical health, motherhood, aging and sexuality and generally impatiently refuse easy answers”.

There is also a programme of events and learning opportunities running alongside the exhibition, including artist-led tours, free public workshops, a film night, and a full-day symposia.

CONSUMED is at ArtHouse Jersey’s Capital House until Sunday 30 November. Entry is free, with the venue closed on Mondays.

International Guitar Festival

The International Guitar Festival returns to Jersey next month, bringing together world-class musicians for a weekend of performances.

Music in Action’s fourth annual event takes place from Thursday 13 to Saturday 15 November.

Described as bringing three days of concerts and master classes, the event will showcase guitar in a range of styles including Spanish classics and gypsy jazz.

This year’s line-up includes classical guitarist Xuefei Yang – who was named by BBC Music Magazine as “one of the top six guitarists of the 21st century” – as well as improvising violinist Tim Kliphuis, guitarist Nigel Clark, and violinist Harriet Mackenzie.

Christmas stock launch

Three Trinity businesses are set to come together this weekend to celebrate the launch of their Christmas stock.

Rondels Farm Shop, The Gooseberry Bush and Age Concern – all located on Rue de Haut de l’Orme – are displaying their Christmas goodies early this year due to the impact of roadworks.

Attendees will benefit from 5% off purchases over £50 and 10% off purchases over £100 from Friday 31 October to Sunday 2 November in a bid to generate support for small local businesses.
