As the weather starts to improve – but yet is still too chilly to brave the great outdoors, it’s the perfect time of year to recharge your batteries with music, theatre, and art.

Express has found some of the island’s cultural highlights to look forward to.

Start the weekend with jazz

Swing away the stress of the week with a jazz night at the Savoy Hotel tonight.

The Brian White/Tim Horsfall Quintet are bringing back weekly sessions, described as “jazz the way Friday intended”.

Head to the Savoy on Friday from 7.30pm, and sit back…

Discover a brand-new ballet

Jersey’s own ballet company, Ballet d’Jèrri, is premiering a new piece of work at the Opera House.

Though it was set up three years ago, the company only recently moved into its permanent home at the newly-refurbished venue – and this weekend’s performances include live music and new ideas.

The evening features eight world premieres curated by pianist Anika Vavić, choreographed by local and international artists.

Tickets for Under_Score are available on the Jersey Opera House website.

Listen to ghostly folk tales

Who doesn’t love a weekend of storytelling, myths, ghosts and magic?

Hamptonne Country Life Museum is hosting an afternoon of Jersey folklore for families, told around the fireside.

They promise stories of “ghostly brides, snarling dogs and fearsome dragons” that once haunted the island…

Head to Hamptonne from 1pm on Sunday to find out more. Tickets are available on the Jersey Heritage website.

Stroll through the market…

St Peter’s Indoor Saturday Market is due to return this weekend – an opportunity to stock up on jam and chutney, cards, dog treats and more…

Or you may fancy strolling around and seeing the impressive work of many local artists and small businesses.

Find the market at the St Peter Rifle Range, opposite the Community Centre, from 9.30am to 2.30pm on Saturday.

First Dates for Valentine’s Day

Jersey Green Room Club is set to take the stage for a production of the musical First Date.

The show – described as “fast-tracked” with “big talent, live music and big energy” – features Aaron and Casey as a normal date descends into an evening of comedy and heart.

Tickets are available from Jersey Arts Centre, with performances scheduled from 10 to 14 February.

Bring your art to the marina…

Elizabeth Marina is set to become a “literal and symbolic safe haven”.

A call for artists to submit works for Art in the Arches – a public art project at Elizabeth Marina – has reopened under the theme of “Safe Haven”.

The project is open to local artists, community groups, and schoolchildren.

Ideas inspired by themes such as safety, belonging, and connection, should be submitted to amy@arts.je by Monday 8 March. Submissions should include a short proposal of up to 500 words, a PDF or online portfolio of previous work, and a copy of the artist’s CV.

Can you find the octopus gate?

Jersey-based Artisan Iron has posted pictures of an elusive “octopus gate” – can you find the “pieuvre”-inspired artwork this weekend?
