Peter James decided to lend his race-specification BMW M3 to engage young people in promoting road safety.
Mr James, who is now a Jersey resident, says he was inspired to loan his car after working with UK police forces during the research processes for his novels. “I’ve developed such admiration for the vital work that they do… When I heard about the Force’s road safety work I wondered how I could help.”
Whilst the car can legally be driven on the roads in Jersey, it will not be used for routine patrols.
Originally unveiled at the Battle of Flowers, it will instead be used in various road safety campaigns and policing activity until the end of 2019.
Look what #Jersey States #Police have done to this #BMW I have loaned them! They are using it to try to engage with youngsters on a road safety campaign. I’m hoping they’ll take me for a ride in it – but not in the back seat in handcuffs! pic.twitter.com/V3dpwhAY2s

Superintendent James Wileman said confident that the car will act as a conversation starter, attracting attention to the Police’s road safety campaigns.
Chief Inspector Alison Fossey, Head of Community Policing, commented: “This is an excellent way to help us raise the profile of road safety in Jersey… Each year we have a number of serious and sometimes fatal road accidents on our roads and we will continue to find innovative ways of increasing awareness and trying to reduce accidents.”
