A former Bailiwick Express reporter has been shortlisted for two national journalism awards out of a record number of entries.
Jodie Yettram was shortlisted by the National Council for the Training of Journalists in the ‘top scoop’ and ‘data journalism’ categories in its Awards for Excellence.
Just 82 entries were shortlisted out of over 550 applicants.
Jodie was shortlisted in the ‘top scoop’ category for breaking the news that Jersey’s home-birth service had been suspended, and in the ‘data journalism’ category for an article about what is driving the emigration of young people from the island.
She said: “The data journalism piece took time to put together, and I was hugely grateful to Statistics Jersey for putting together a bespoke dataset for me to help understand what’s driving the so-called ‘bean drain’ – the emigration of young people from the island.
“Ironically, I’m now being ‘bean-drained’ myself, and am leaving the island next month to travel in Asia after a whirlwind two years at the best newsroom ever.”

Jodie added: “The home-birth story for the top scoop category was very different – it came together quickly after I broke the news that the service had been suspended, and many women were incredibly open in sharing their experiences around a very personal and emotive subject.
“It’s been a real privilege to speak to people about issues that matter to them and to report on topics I care about, particularly those affecting women and young people, and it’s amazing to have that work recognised before I head off to create some stories of my own.”
Shortlisted entrants have been invited to an awards ceremony and lunch at the Brighton Dome in March.
