Artists are being invited to transform the walls of a local art gallery as part of a live painting challenge to mark 50 years since the birth of British punk.
‘Still Loud’ is set to debut at the Jersey Arts Centre from Monday 2 March.
The time-constrained exhibition will see selected artists work directly onto the walls at the Berni Gallery across one week to create a new artwork in response to the punk theme.
Applicants are asked to propose an idea, rather than a finished design, which they will then realise over a 40-hour time period.
Chosen artists will have access to the gallery between 23 February and 1 March 2026, with work completed in time for the exhibition opening on Monday 2 March.
Proposals are not limited to any specific artistic discipline and artists are permitted to work with any non-permanent materials which can be painted over or safely removed at the end of the exhibition.
According to Jersey Arts Centre: “Still Loud asks artists to respond to punk not simply as a style, but as a position – questioning authority, embracing imperfection, resisting polish, or reinterpreting rebellion fifty years on.”
British punk is credited with beginning in 1976 with the dissemination of music by bands like The Clash and Sex Pistols, and the famous SEX shop established on King’s Road in London by Vivienne Westwood and her then-partner Malcolm McLaren.
Encapsulated by the Sex Pistols’ “No Future” slogan, punk in the UK was born of rife unemployment and social unrest, which gave way to a youth subculture that sought to shock and challenge the status quo.
Bands like X-Ray Spex, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Slits provided the soundtrack to this social revolution.
Punk expanded throughout the 1970s and 1980s, folding in other musical and social movements like Rock Against Racism, which was recently revived after the murder of George Floyd.
Jersey Arts Centre will cover the cost of materials for any artists selected to take part in ‘Still Loud’, as well as providing a small fee for their work.
Artistic proposals can be submitted before 5pm on Monday 2 February here.
