A 14-year-old boy who was restrained and arrested following a knife-related “incident” at a Jersey school yesterday has also been linked to an attempted knifepoint robbery over the weekend, police have confirmed.
In an update issued shortly before 13:15, officers said that they had identified and arrested a teenage boy in connection with an attempted robbery on La Route de la Haule in St Brelade on Saturday evening.
Police were called at around 5.35pm on Saturday after a hooded individual allegedly knocked on the door of a property and threatened the occupant with a small knife while demanding car keys. The door was shut and locked and the suspect did not gain entry. No injuries were reported.
Following a public appeal issued yesterday afternoon, police said today that information from members of the public, along with additional CCTV footage, helped officers confirm the identity of the suspect and secure key evidence.
It was also confirmed that the same 14-year-old boy was linked to a separate incident at Haute Vallée School yesterday, which saw the teenager restrained by staff until officers arrived.
One student sustained a “very minor” injury to their hand. No other injuries were reported.
“We would like to thank members of the public who came forward with information. Additional CCTV footage obtained from the area enabled officers to confirm the identity of the individual,” the force said.
“Officers worked throughout the weekend, following multiple lines of enquiry which helped identify the suspect and secure key evidence.”
They said that their investigation remained “ongoing” and that updates would be provided “when appropriate”.
Police added they are continuing to work closely with Children, Young People, Education and Skills (CYPES) to ensure staff and students are supported.
Following yesterday’s “very serious incident”, Haute Vallée headteacher Stuart Hughes wrote an email to parents and carers to provide reassurance that all students and staff had been spoken to and that wellbeing support is in place.
“I would like to say how proud I am of our school community,” he added.
“Staff responded swiftly with exceptional professionalism, and students were calm, respectful, and supportive of one another throughout.
“As this is a live police investigation, I am unable to comment further at this stage, but I would like to stress that this is an extremely rare incident.”
Mr Hughes added: “I wish to stress once again that this is an extremely rare incident in which we are working closely with the States of Jersey Police and Education Department colleagues to further understand the events that occurred and ensure that the safety and wellbeing of student and staff is paramount.”
The school opened as normal today.
Education Minister Rob Ward said in a statement last night that he was proud of the school community.
“I would… like to acknowledge the exemplary conduct of students, who remained calm and cooperative throughout. The school community responded with maturity and resilience at a very challenging moment,” he said.
The Minister later added: “Our children’s safety will always come first, and I am proud of the way the school community has responded.”
