A man accused of targeting lone women in the early hours of the morning has been challenged over why he repeatedly approached women rather than men if he was lost and looking for directions.
Abdelkarim Arfaoui (27) denies ten charges against five different women, including attempted rape and five counts of sexual touching without consent.
The care assistant is accused of attacking one woman as he walked through town with her, before wandering around town and threatening or assaulting the four other women he came across.
Using CCTV, Mr Arfaoui’s movements across town have been mapped during the hour and a half when the alleged incidents took place. He was arrested shortly after the fifth alleged offence.
Mr Arfaoui has claimed throughout the trial that he was very drunk and lost because he was new to the Island.
He said that he was trying to ask the women for directions to get home, becoming more and more desperate and not understanding why they all turned him down or ran away and screamed. He denies committing any offences.
This morning, Crown Advocate Lauren Hallam asked him about approaching the fourth complainant.
She said: “You’d already scared two women. Why didn’t you ask a man?”
Mr Arfaoui replied: “I didn’t find any man.”
The Crown Advocate asked: “You were targeting women, weren’t you?”
He replied: “No, not targeting anyone.”
Crown Advocate Hallam put to him that the location where he approached the fourth woman was very near his house.
Mr Arfaoui said he realised this now, “but at that moment… I don’t even know where I am”.
He said that in order not to scare the woman, he decided to introduce himself and say he was from Tunisia before asking for directions.
Mr Arfaoui denied grabbing her bottom and said he apologised, but she refused to shake his hand and “started shouting” at him.
After he left, he was shown on CCTV walking towards the bus station. He said this was because Liberation Station was one of the few places he knew, so he could navigate home from there.
Crown Advocate Hallam said Mr Arfaoui was “certainly not lost” at this time.
Mr Arfaoui said he was “50/50”, adding: “I know that I’m at the bus station at that moment and I know the road to take at that time.”
On his way between the bus station and his flat, Mr Arfaoui was pictured on CCTV stopped on a pavement.
Crown Advocate Hallam asked why he did not approach several men shown walking past him at this time, but Mr Arfaoui said he was “busy rolling a cigarette”.
Crown Advocate Hallam said: “You’re so desperate to go home that you approach [four women], but you ignore this man going past.”
Mr Arfaoui is then shown “confidently” turning from King Street into Bath Street, before arriving at West’s Centre – just metres from his flat.
The defendant said he was so tired and drunk that “all the streets look[ed] the same”.
Crown Advocate Hallam said: “Is it your evidence that you’re so desperate to get home that you approach women, but you are paying so little attention to your surroundings that you did not notice the statues of the cows?”
Mr Arfaoui said: “No, that’s not true. At that moment, I’m not seeing any cows.
“At that moment, I hope you understand that I am very intoxicated and I already said at that stage I was ten out of ten drunk.”
He maintained that he approached the fifth woman for directions, despite being very close to his home.
Mr Arfaoui denied touching her behind, stating that he leaned into her and touched her back in the way one might do “with your son, with your dad”.
He said: “Touching the bottom is very different for me. I just did like that, I said sorry, and I left.”
Mr Arfaoui denied giving the woman “sex attention”.
Commissioner Alan Binnington is presiding. The trial continues today.
