The trial has been set up by the Department for Infrastructure – the new name for the old TTS department – who say that there’s around 2,300 people who use the stretch of road every lunchtime, and that pedestrians and cyclists make up 93% of the traffic on the road.
They say that once the Jersey International Finance Centre is built, that number will only get bigger – and that they want to make it easier to walk around town, and to see if more pedestrianisation helps to make town more attractive and vibrant.
When the trial was first announced, Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel said: “The narrow pavements of this road struggle to cope with the large numbers of pedestrians using the area. By closing off this road, we are creating a better and safer place to live and work in line with the Future St Helier initiative.”
