Jersey Cricket has confirmed it will be including a player who recently pleaded guilty to motoring offences in its squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in the Netherlands.
Taking place from 5 to 11 July, the qualifier will see the team face hosts Netherlands, in addition to Guernsey, Italy, and Scotland in a round-robin format.
Among those confirmed in the 15-player squad was Nick Greenwood, who this week appeared in Jersey’s Magistrate’s Court where he admitted driving without insurance, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, and failing to comply with traffic directions in the early hours of 8 June – at the end of a night out following the inter-insular cricket match at the start of this month.
He is due to be sentenced in July, and the court heard it was “likely” this would mean his New Zealand contract would be able to be renewed.
However, Jersey Cricket confirmed today that they would still be allowing him to join the Island team.
CEO Sarah Gomersall said: “We acknowledge the seriousness of the situation and are disappointed that it has arisen. However, with legal proceedings ongoing, we are not in a position to comment further at this stage.”
The club added that, in determining their selection, they considered precedent set by other international cricketing bodies, including New Zealand Cricket and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), “who have in past instances permitted players facing non-cricket-related legal proceedings to continue to represent their teams”.
“Consistent with this approach, we have selected players based solely on cricketing merit,” they added in a statement.
The Netherlands trip will also include warm-up matches, which Jersey Cricket said would provide the team with “valuable preparation against strong opposition in Scotland and the Netherlands ahead of the main fixtures”.
The top two teams from the Qualifier will secure a place at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026.
Director of Cricket, Paul Hutchison, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for us to test ourselves against some of the best teams in Europe. The squad has been preparing with real focus and intensity, and every match gives us the chance to show what Jersey cricket stands for – skill, spirit, and ambition.
“A place at the World Cup would be a milestone moment for Jersey Cricket. We know it won’t come easy, but we’re ready for the challenge.”
