A Deputy who resigned as an Assistant Minister last week over what she described as “fundamental differences” with the Council of Ministers has confirmed her intention to step down from the States Assembly.
After four years’ service as a representative for St Brelade, Deputy Moz Scott said she would not be standing for re-election when the island goes to the polls on 7 June.
In a media release, Deputy Scott stated: “This has not been an easy decision – I care deeply about the work and the people involved.
“It has been a privilege to serve as Deputy of St Brelade, and I am grateful for the trust and support of those who elected me, as well as the wider island community.”
Following the formation of the new government in early 2024, Deputy Scott was appointed as Assistant Economic Development Minister and subsequently to the same role in External Relations.
But her time in government came to an end when she confirmed her resignation last week, citing concerns over the ferry contract and the impact of economic policy on local industries.
As she confirmed she would not be standing in the June election, Deputy Scott referred to “fundamental differences with the Council of Ministers and a need for reform of the Department of the Economy” as well as her conviction that stronger political leadership was required on economic policy.
The former lawyer said she was proud of her work while in government, including working on Jersey’s new Cybersecurity Law, a Cybersecurity Policy Framework, the modernisation of intellectual property regulation, and policy work on online harms and data protection.
Deputy Scott also produced a report on the handling of complaints against public services, but became frustrated that moves towards the appointment of a public services ombudsperson to oversee the complaints process did not move more quickly.
Leaving politics in June would, Deputy Scott added, allow her to focus her time and energy on a project she had not been able to pursue while serving as a States Member. Contacted by Express, she declined to elaborate on this project.
