Timed to coincide with the start of the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, a survey has been launched this week to help policymakers get a better understanding of islanders’ perceptions of disability, accessibility, and equality.
Helping to launch the survey is Stuart Penn, who is the subject of this week’s Bailiwick Podcast.
The Operations Manager at Skills Jersey is disabled himself, having been born with only one fully formed limb, and has been supporting the team charged with implementing the Government’s disability strategy, which was launched in 2017 and updated last year.
He is also a black belt in taekwondo and was a gold medallist at the first para-Jiu-Jitsu World Championships in Dubai in 2017.
In the podcast, Mr Penn shares his own story and some of the stigmas that disabled people face, as well as describing Jersey’s efforts to ensure that disabled people have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.
