Drivers are being urged to slow down after the JSPCA was called out to seven red squirrels involved in road accidents in a single day.
The animal shelter described the total reported so far today as “a worrying number of casualties in such a short space of time”.
With fine weather forecast over the coming week, the charity said squirrels were likely to be out searching for food and exploring their surroundings.
It urged motorists to slow down where squirrels may be crossing and take particular care near woodland and roads surrounded by trees.
Anyone who hits a squirrel should stop somewhere safe and call the JSPCA for advice, or bring the animal directly to the shelter if it is safe to do so.
“These little animals are precious, and every life matters. A few extra seconds of care and attention behind the wheel could make all the difference,” the charity said.
Alongside its appeal, the JSPCA shared a photograph of an injured squirrel. It escaped with a split lip, which the shelter’s vets stitched back together.
The charity asked Islanders to share its warning to help protect Jersey’s red squirrels.
