Durrell has announced a new curator of herpetology and invertebrates.

Deputy curator of herpetology and invertebrates Ciaran Westgate has been promoted to the role to replace Matt Goetz, who is leaving the island after working for the conservation trust since 2002.

Mr Westgate first joined Durrell in 2021 as a senior keeper after working at Tilgate Zoo and SeaLife Brighton.

The wildlife trust said he has worked closely with his predecessor for the past five years and is actively involved with several conservation programmes.

Mr Westgate is also the vice-chair of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA)’s Reptile and Amphibian Working Group, and co-ordinates the European Breeding Programme for the emerald tree monitor lizard.

Mr Westgate said he was “truly honoured” to take on this “important and exciting” role.

“As a herpetologist and an all-round planet Earth lover, the role really encompasses everything I am passionate about,” he added.

“Durrell’s stories and vision are very close to my heart, and I am looking forward to continuing the inspirational work of my predecessors, to deliver true impact, both here in Jersey and around the world.”
