Elon Musk has proposed renaming the body of water in which the Channel Islands sit in honour of the first US president.
In a tweet posted on X on Sunday, the tech billionaire and presidential advisor shared an image of the English Channel and suggested it be renamed the “George Washington Channel”.
The post in which he suggested a “new name for the water that separates England and France” has garnered over 400,000 likes and almost 40,000 replies.

The English Channel, which is referred to as “La Manche” (The Sleeve) in French, is the busiest shipping area in the world.
Musk’s suggestion comes just days after new US president Donald Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” earlier this month – pointing to its proximity to the United States and claiming the new name had a “beautiful ring to it”.
