The Fire and Rescue Service was called to the to the scene at Belvedere Hill in St Saviour at around 22:45 on Tuesday night, after a resident awoke to a fire and heavy smoke in his room.

The Fire Service said the man had managed to escape after throwing a fire blanket over the flames.

He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

Around 30 occupants of the building’s other self-catering units were evacuated and moved to accommodation in a “nearby” hotel.

The Fire Service said four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had entered the property to deal with the fire.

An investigation is now underway.
