Local businesses are being urged to be aware of a new scam which impersonates Jersey’s financial services regulator and one of its executive directors.

The Jersey Financial Services Commission issued a fraud warning after being made aware of a scam impersonating the watchdog.

The scammers are sending emails from an address which purports to be JFSC executive director Kerry Petulla: kerry.petulla@mail-jerseyfsc.org. This email address is fake.

The scam emails are being sent to businesses, and falsely claim that a preliminary reference has been made to the business as part of an internal regulatory assessment within the JFSC. The business is then urged to confirm contact details for secure communication.

In a statement, the JFSC said: “This is a scam. The impersonating email address and emails sent from it are not in any way connected to the JFSC or Kerry Petulla.

“If you receive an email like this, do not respond.”

Islanders are urged to take the following steps to verify that any correspondence from the JFSC is genuine:

  • only use the JFSC’s official website: www.jerseyfsc.org
  • ensure emails from the JFSC match the official JFSC email domain: @jerseyfsc.org
  • call the JFSC on 01534 822000 and ask to speak to the individual who sent, or appears to have sent the message, to verify its legitimacy.

The JFSC’s confidential whistleblowing line can be contacted on 01534 887557.
