A young woman from Nairobi who was supported by islanders through her education has completed a remarkable full-circle journey after securing a job as a community nurse in Jersey.
Hellen, who grew up in Nairobi, was sponsored through college thanks to fundraising efforts led by islander Gill Bell and supporters of the Nairobi Slum Schools Projects Trust.
For 16 years, Gill held charity sales in Jersey every Sunday morning to raise funds for projects supporting schools in Nairobi’s slum communities.
The fundraising helped sponsor Hellen through her studies, enabling her to qualify as a community nurse.
Now, Hellen has obtained a working visa for Jersey and has been employed by Les Amis, a local charity which supports islanders with learning disabilities.
Gill shared the news on social media, thanking the many volunteers and donors who had contributed to the fundraising efforts over the years.
Hellen is currently looking for “entitled” studio or one-bedroom accommodation with parking in Jersey. If you can help, please get in touch with Gill via Facebook.
