A remarkable collection of rare works by a celebrated Jersey artist once owned by a former Lieutenant-Governor is set to go under the hammer this month – and “strong interest” is expected in the Channel Islands and beyond.
Several pieces from the collection, which once adorned the walls of Government House, are to be auctioned online at Dawsons Auctions on Wednesday 26 February.
Widely regarded as Jersey’s most renowned artist, Edmund Blampied is celebrated for his ability to capture the essence of island life with charm, character, and a deep sense of place.
His works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, making the sale a significant event for collectors and art enthusiasts alike.

This particular collection was previously owned by Lady Cicely G. Nicholson, wife of Admiral Sir Randolph Stewart Gresham Nicholson, who served as Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey between 1953-58.
The pieces include some of Blampied’s most evocative depictions of Jersey life.

Among the highlights of the collection is watercolour ‘Peeling Potatoes’, which features an an accompanying letter attached to the back of the artwork from Mr Blampied to Lady Nicholson:
“Dear Lady Nicholson, the old lady peeling potatoes must be, I am sure, feeling so greatly honoured at being in Government House – but at the same time wishing most desperately that she had on a cleaner apron and the hat especially reserved for Sundays which is fitted with black grapes, ribbon and a kingfisher…”

A final piece, ‘Vraicking, Jersey; Study of Flowers’ – a double-sided piece depicting traditional seaweed harvesting – will also be auctioned.
It has been given an expected price tag of £3,000-£5,000.

“It is a privilege to bring such a special collection to auction,” Jonathan Pratt, Managing Director of Dawsons Auctioneers, said.
“Blampied’s connection to Jersey and the provenance of these paintings makes them particularly noteworthy.
“We anticipate strong interest from collectors both in the Channel Islands and beyond.”
The online auction will form part of Dawsons’ ‘Fine Pictures, Prints & Sculptures’ sale.
