Islanders disappointed by the cancellation of the Battle of Flowers fireworks will get another chance to see the night sky light up when Gorey Fête returns tomorrow.
The annual fête will conclude with a fireworks display at 10.30pm on Friday, less than a week after exceptionally dry conditions led to the cancellation of the Moonlight Parade’s planned pyrotechnic finale.
Like the Battle display, the Gorey fireworks are due to be launched from offshore – with organisers confirming they will be set off from a barge in Grouville Bay to minimise the risks associated with the current dry weather.
Last week’s Battle fireworks had been due to launch from a vessel in St Aubin’s Bay, but organisers said they were unable to secure the necessary licence following discussions over permissions and assurances amid the dry conditions.
Jersey had officially moved into drought earlier that week following 15 consecutive days without measurable rainfall, while temperatures peaked at 35.6°C last Wednesday.
But rain this week means that fireworks can form part of the finale of a packed programme at Gorey Fête – with fancy dress, live music and competitions also planned throughout the day.
Gates open at 10am, with entertainment running throughout the day:
- 12pm – Captain Joe’s Parrot
- 1pm – Percy Fedora Castle Explorer
- 1.45pm – Welcome by Special Guests
- 2pm – Fancy Dress Competition
- 2.45pm – Sparkle and Sing
- 3.45pm – Hot Bananas
- 4.35pm – Rick Jones
- 5.30pm – Maisie Robertson
- 6.30pm – Juniper
- 7.30pm – Spaghetti Eating Competition
- 8pm – Yard of Ale Competition
- 8.45pm – Forte
- 10.30pm – Fireworks
Entry is free for children under five, £3 for those aged five to 15, and £7 for anyone aged 16 and over.
Car parking will be available at Grouville Common and Haut de la Garenne, with a shuttle bus service provided.
Since 2018, the Gorey Fête and St Martin Bonfire have together donated £184,950 to local charities and community causes.
Money raised from this year’s fête will be shared between BeachAbility, Jersey Heart Support Group and Normandy Rescue.
Jersey Mutual and Jersey Post sponsor the 2026 event.
