School-run chaos outside St Michael’s School is set to be tamed with a new zebra crossing aimed at improving safety during the busiest times of the day – with hopes that it will also lead to improved air quality too.
Following discussions with the school, St Saviour Constable Kevin Lewis and the parish roads committee have approved the long-awaited crossing on Rue de la Houguette.
The move comes in response to concerns over pedestrian safety, particularly for students navigating the busy road during drop-off and pick-up times.
The crossing will connect the school’s main entrance to its car park, with work scheduled to begin on 24 February during the school’s half-term break to minimise disruption.
In addition to the crossing, the parish is shaking up the local traffic flow.
A section of Rue de la Houguette, currently one-way, will be converted into a two-way system from the school car park exit to Rue des Friquettes. However, the stretch leading towards Prince’s Tower Road will remain one-way.
The Constable said the project was about more than just safety, also aiming to ease congestion and promote greener travel.
“We are pleased to promote safer walking for all pedestrians, including children and families, while also minimising congestion and reducing carbon emissions, contributing to healthier air quality for our community,” he commented.
St Michael’s School has welcomed the improvements.
Its headmaster and governors said the installation of a zebra crossing and changes to traffic flow “will make a real difference, ensuring safer journeys to and from school”.
“Our staff and pupils are excited to see these improvements take effect, and we appreciate the parish’s efforts in prioritising school safety,” they added.
