Two fire engines and a truck were sent to deal with the blaze at Verona Stores after receiving “multiple calls for thick black smoke” at 07:45.

“Firefighters were met by flames issuing from the windows and two breathing apparatus wearers were immediately commited. They were subsequently supported by an additional six wearers,” Jersey Fire and Rescue said.

“The fire was quickly brought under control and residents in the properties above were evacuated and attended to by our States of Jersey Ambulance Service colleagues.”

They added that the cause of the fire is now under investigation, and thanked motorists that cleared the way for them as they dealt with the fire this morning.
