A new documentary exploring the history and revival of Jèrriais will be showcased at a special one-off screening at the Jersey Museum tonight.

À Bétôt, created by filmmakers Tom and Annigna Kennedy, of Little River Pictures, brings together the voices of elders, teachers, learners, and cultural advocates.

The film looks at what Jèrriais has meant to Jersey in the past and what role it could play in the island’s future.

The screening, hosted by Jersey Heritage and the Jèrriais Teaching Service, is taking place from 5.30pm.

This documentary shows that Jèrriais can be part of our future as well as our past

Described as an “intimate and moving portrait of Jèrriais”, the documentary weaves together interviews with some of the last generation of native speakers, together with those driving the language’s modern-day revival.

Through these conversations, it traces the journey of Jèrriais from a widely spoken community tongue to a heritage under threat – and now to a language experiencing a comeback.

The documentary is expected to be released to the wider public in spring 2026, with specific dates due to be confirmed early next year.

Ben Spink, head of the Jèrriais teaching service, said: “This documentary shows that Jèrriais can be part of our future as well as our past and we hope it inspires islanders to connect with the language that belongs to us all.”
