Three Jersey charity leaders have shared their experience of attending a royal garden party at Buckingham Palace after being recognised for their service to the community.

Samaritans Jersey director Tarnia Snepp, Freeda service manager Jess Bailey, and Sanctuary Trust chief executive Sarah Tumelty were invited to the event earlier this month.

Hosted by King Charles III and other members of the Royal Family, the annual garden parties celebrate individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and public life.

The Jersey trio joined thousands of guests in the palace gardens, where they enjoyed afternoon tea and the opportunity to meet people from across the British Isles who had been recognised for their charitable and voluntary work.

“It felt quite surreal”

Tarnia said it felt “surreal” to see the Royals in real life.

“Apart from Princess Anne – whom I have met previously – I had only ever seen them on television,” she explained.

“Tea was served in the most beautiful marquee, complete with silk drapes and enormous flower arrangements.

“We were able to choose from a vast selection of finger sandwiches, pastries, and, of course, tea.”

She added: “I genuinely found myself thinking about our volunteers throughout the day and wishing that we could all have experienced it together.

“The day was every bit as special as I had hoped – truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

“It was a real privilege”

Jess told Express that when she first received the invitation, she thought it was a scam.

“I genuinely thought it was a scam email and had to check with colleagues to make sure it was real,” she recalled.

“Once it sank in, it was more shock than anything else. Being invited to something like that had never really crossed my mind, so it felt very surreal and a real privilege to attend.”

Jess described the atmosphere on the day as “incredible”.

“There were so many friendly people from completely different sectors and backgrounds, all there because of the work they do in their communities,” she added.

“The gardens were huge and beautiful to walk around, and the sandwiches and cakes were amazing.”

“I had a wonderful day”

Sarah described the experience as “a real privilege”.

“I’m very grateful,” she added.

“I had a wonderful day, enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea, and even managed to see King Charles.

“It was also a great opportunity to represent Sanctuary Trust and share the experience with others.

“Seeing everyone dressed up and making the most of such a special occasion made it a day I’ll always remember.”
