Jersey Opera House is advertising for a new CEO – with an annual salary of up to £90,000 available for the successful candidate.

The theatre – which is set to officially reopen this autumn for the first time since 2020 – advertised the role through an international firm that specialises in finding, placing and developing leaders for the arts, entertainment and creative industries.

The job listing on the AEM International website listed the annual salary for the post as between £80,000 and £90,000.

In the online recruitment pack, Opera House interim chair Laura Robertson said the successful candidate would lead the organisation into “a bold new chapter” and will be responsible for working with the board, government and stakeholders, to deliver a “distinctive” artistic programme.

The job description added that the new CEO would be expected to build overseas relationships, and embed a sustainable vision and business model as the theatre prepares to re-awaken in its 125th anniversary year following a £12.7m government grant.

It comes amid a tumultuous time for the Opera House, with several high level departures in recent months.

Interim chair Dave Chalk and interim director Andy Eagle both resigned in April, just weeks before the venue was due to partially reopen for Liberation Day.

Cyril Whelan stepped down last month after 13 years on the board and less than eight weeks as interim chair, and non-executive director Bruno Santos-Costa become the fourth individual in three months to step away from a senior role just one week later.

The recruitment process for the new Opera House CEO will be overseen by the Jersey Appointments Commission.

The Jersey Opera House said the ideal candidate will be “collaborative, politically astute, commercially aware and deeply committed to shaping cultural life in the unique Jersey island setting”.

The recruitment pack added: “This is an exceptional opportunity to define an historic theatre for a new era, that positions Jersey Opera House as a renewed centre for cultural life in Jersey and a landmark venue across the Channel Islands and beyond.”
