The actor and Durrell ambassador made the revelation that he would be starring as ‘Geralt of Rivia’ in fantasy series ‘The Witcher’ last night.

The programme will be based on the popular Polish book and short story series, which rose to prominence after being made into a game.

Over eight episodes expected to air in 2020, the series will follow Geralt as he battles beasts, enchants a sorceress and meets a secretive young princess, working his way across a dangerous continent with the pair.

The casting marks Cavill’s return to TV screens for the first time in eight years. He last appeared in The Tudors, but later went on to star in films including Superman, the Man from UNCLE, and, most recently, Mission Impossible.

But over the past month Cavill made it very clear in interviews and social media posts that Geralt was on his mind – and that he was going to stop at nothing to star as him one day in interviews.

One of those clues came in an Instagram post on August 9, when Cavill shared some fan artwork detailing what he could look like if he scored the role.

Yesterday, Cavill announced he’d be playing the Witcher on the same platform in a photo with a jokey caption:

“My new mailing address is: Geralt, C/O Vesemir, Kaer Morhen, Kaer Morhen Valley, Hertch, Kaedwen. Please note, I’m rarely there. Monster slaying being what it is. So, replies will be few and far between, if at all.”

Fans from across the globe have welcomed the news, with one writing that felt so happy she could cry.

However, they’ll have to wait before they can enjoy Cavill become Geralt.

Filming is yet to begin on the production, which is expected to air in 2020.
